Your Year-End HR Checkup

Kennedy Burr

The end of the year is filled with deadlines, budgets, holiday schedules, and planning for what's next. But before your business closes the book on 2026, there's one more area that deserves attention: HR.

A year-end HR checkup gives your business a chance to clean up what isn't working, update what's outdated, and head into 2027 with stronger people processes in place.

You don't need to overhaul everything before January. You just need to know where you stand and what needs your attention next.

Clean Files, Clear Mind

Start with the basics: employee files, records, and required documentation.

Are employee records complete and organized? Are important forms and acknowledgments where they should be? Have changes to positions, compensation, or employee information been properly documented?

Small documentation gaps are easy to overlook throughout a busy year. Reviewing records now can help identify missing information and create better processes moving forward.

The goal is simple: don't carry preventable administrative problems into 2027.

Don’t Let 2026 Policies Follow You Into 2027

Your business probably changed this year. Did your handbook change with it?

Review policies to make sure they still reflect how your organization actually operates. Look at areas like attendance, PTO, workplace expectations, remote work, employee conduct, and other policies that may need attention.

This is also a good time to identify policies that are unclear or difficult for employees and managers to understand.

A handbook shouldn't simply exist. It should be a practical resource your team can actually use.

Prepare Managers Before the Conversation

Year-end performance conversations shouldn't catch managers—or employees—off guard.

Before reviews begin, make sure managers understand expectations, know how to provide constructive feedback, and are prepared to have productive conversations about both performance and development.

Consistency matters, too. Employees should receive thoughtful feedback based on clear expectations rather than completely different experiences depending on their manager.

Preparing leaders ahead of time can turn performance reviews from an annual obligation into a meaningful opportunity for growth.

Make Sure Every Seat Still Fits

Businesses evolve quickly, and job descriptions don't always keep up.

Review roles to determine whether responsibilities, titles, and expectations still reflect the work employees are actually doing. This is also an opportunity to evaluate compensation structures and identify areas where responsibilities have become unclear or overlapping.

Role clarity improves accountability and helps employees understand exactly how they contribute to the organization's goals.

Give Q1 a Head Start

Don't wait until January to decide what HR needs attention.

Use your year-end review to create a focused HR priority list for Q1 2027. Maybe your handbook needs an update. Managers need additional training. Hiring processes need structure. Job descriptions need rewriting.

Prioritize what will make the biggest impact and create a realistic plan for tackling it.

Starting January with direction is much easier than starting with a list of problems.

Close the Year With Confidence

  • Review employee records and documentation for missing or outdated information.
  • Update handbooks and policies to reflect current practices and needs.
  • Prepare managers for consistent, productive year-end conversations.
  • Review job descriptions, compensation, and role clarity.
  • Create a focused HR priority list before Q1 2027 begins.
